15 Years Later, $400 Million Sci-Fi Blockbuster’s Sequel Escapes the Grid in New Look
The grid is continuing to expand thanks to Disney with Tron: Ares this fall. While the first trailer that debuted in April offered a tantalizing look at the long-awaited sequel, the studio has now released a new image to keep anticipation alive, and, of course, showcase Jared Leto’s Ares front and center to continue to build excitement ahead of the October 10, 2025, release date. The film marks the first new chapter in the Tron saga in 15 years, following 2010’s Tron: Legacy, which grossed over $400 million worldwide and cemented the franchise’s neon-soaked visuals in pop culture.
Fifteen Years Later, the Grid Powers Up

Development on the new Tron movie has been a rollercoaster ride for over a decade, with false starts, changing directors, and even rumors of cancellation. But Tron: Ares, directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil), has firmly put the franchise back on the grid. The film stars Leto as the titular Ares, a likely sinister and rogue program, who is joined in the new photo (which can be seen above) by Greta Lee and Arturo Castro.
The release of this new image comes at a strategic moment. With the trailer already dissected by fans who have been waiting a long time for a new Tron installment months ago, Disney is using carefully timed reveals to maintain momentum for one of its riskiest but simultaneously ambitious blockbusters on the 2025 release slate. While Legacy was divisive, its visual identity and score left a lasting imprint that has fueled enthusiasm in the years since. Ares aims to build on that foundation while updating the story for the current cultural moment.
Thematically, the franchise has always wrestled with questions of control, freedom, and identity in a digital age. In 2025, those ideas feel sharper than ever. With AI on the rise, concerns over data surveillance, and the boundaries between virtual and physical life growing harder to define, the grid feels less like a metaphor and more like a mirror. That relevance gives Tron: Ares the chance to resonate beyond nostalgia, framing its narrative as a reflection of the anxieties audiences are experiencing in their daily lives. With the marketing campaign, including this new image, steadily building anticipation, the sequel looks well-positioned to bring Tron back into the cultural conversation.
Tron: Ares releases in theaters October 10, 2025.
