Cologne airport reopens after climate activists removed from tarmac

Air traffic resumed at Germany's Cologne/Bonn airport after five climate activists glued themselves to the apron, a police spokeswoman said on Wednesday morning.

The large international airport, which suspended flights around 5:45 am (0345 GMT), said there would be delays and cancellations, but the exact number would be assessed during the course of the morning.

Criminal charges have been filed for offences against the Assembly Act, dangerous interference with air traffic and trespassing, she added.

The protest group Last Generation wrote on social media platform X that several of its activists had cut through a fence and glued themselves to the tarmac near the runways.

Last Generation said that the action was part of an international protest campaign calling for a phase-out of fossil fuels by 2030.

The protest had been planned to take place simultaneously at airports in more than 10 countries worldwide, it said.
