Far-right AfD supporters sing demands for mass deportations
Supporters of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) celebrated the results of the election on Sunday in the eastern state of Brandenburg with cheers - and musical calls for mass deportations of migrants.
The crowd at the event, held at a restaurant on the outskirts of the state capital of Potsdam, cheered as initial results showed the AfD with nearly 30% of the vote in Brandenburg.
Young supporters loudly sang aggressive songs, including a tune with the lines "we'll deport them all, deport them all" while others waived a placard printed with the slogan "deport millions."
Among those attending the party were the AfD's top candidate in Brandenburg, Hans-Christoph Berndt, as well as national AfD co-leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla.
Björn Höcke, a well-known AfD firebrand who leads the party in the central state of Thuringia, also attended.
Outside the event, hundreds of anti-AfD protesters gathered at a counter demonstration. Protesters held banners with messages including "Potsdam Nazi-free" and "No place for the AfD." Police officers positioned themselves between the protesters and the jubilant AfD crowd.
