Germany's tourist sector saw a record number of overnight stays in August, the national statistics agency said on Friday.

Destatis recorded 59 million overnight stays in the country, finally surpassing the pre-pandemic record set in July 2019.

Domestic tourists accounted for 48.9 million stays in August, or 83% of the total, while authorities recorded a 5.7% rise in stays by foreign visitors compared to the previous year.

Campsites saw particularly strong demand in August, registering 9.7 million stays to surpass the previous record of 9.5 million set in August 2022.

Overall, overnight stays rose by 2% in the first eight months of 2024, Destatis said.
