Gwyneth Paltrow Reveals the Story Behind Her "Conscious Uncoupling”
Gwyneth Paltrow Says She was Fired From Movie After Chris Martin Split
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin consciously uncoupled for their kids.
The Oscar winner revealed that she and the Coldplay frontman made a very specific decision to keep their focus on kids Apple, 22, and Moses, 20, as they announced their separation in 2014, which lead to their now infamous declaration of “conscious uncoupling” after 10 years of marriage.
“We really sat down and thought, ‘Is there a way that we could do this?’ Paltrow shared on a recent episode of the Friends Keep Secrets podcast. “Because—this is very me—but when I was getting divorced, I was like, ‘How do I do this?’”
The question led the 53-year-old to her friends who grew up with divorced parents, as she asked what the most difficult part was for them.
“I said, ‘Tell me what was the worst thing. What do you feel you have scars from to this day?’” she explained. “And they said, ‘You know, it wasn't really so much the divorce, ‘cause you're a kid, and yes, of course, the idea of it is terrible, but you sort of get used to that quickly.’”
In reality, the most difficult part for most of them was the tension they felt between their parents during and after the divorce.
“‘My dad used to drop me off at the end of the driveway. It was so tense at my birthday parties. They never ate dinner in the same room until my college graduation and it caused me so much pain,’” Paltrow recalled of her friends’ experiences. “So I was like, ‘How could we not do that?’ Is there a way where you can sort of circumvent all of that awful stuff when no one is in the same room and get to the graduation where you're all having dinner at the same table.”

The conversation was helped by Paltrow and Martin’s therapist at the time, who introduced them to the concept of conscious uncoupling and making “a commitment to really put the kids first” and to “stay a family even though we weren't a couple.”
Still, despite coming into it with the best of intentions, the two experienced their share of stressful situations that they did their best to diffuse.
“We used to have brunch every Sunday, the four of us,” Paltrow shared of one such time. “I remember—it’s early on in the thing—and Chris and I were upset with each other about something.”
But the Goop founder didn’t want to let the day “go really off the rails,” so as soon as she and Martin felt the tension begin, they stepped away to the front porch.
“We’re like, ‘Let's just not. Let's just not,’” she said. “We just hugged and we're OK. We fist bumped and then we went to brunch.”

And while Paltrow—who married Brad Falchuk in 2018—is certainly grateful for how she and Martin handled their divorce, she can also understand why there was a bit of backlash to them using the phrase and the way they described their breakup at the time.
“Say you had a really nasty divorce and then you hear this idea that, ‘It doesn’t have to be done this way,” she explained on Good Hang With Amy Poehler in January. “I think implicit learning is like, ‘Oh, f--k. They’re saying I did something wrong.’ Which, of course, was not the intention, but that makes sense to me. That's not a nice thing to contemplate, so I do understand why it was so personal for people.”
