Hiroyuki Sanada Says ‘Shogun’ Season 2 Is ‘Aiming’ to Shoot This Fall: ‘The Writers’ Room Is Working So Hard’

“Shogun” star Hiroyuki Sanada said Season 2 of the Emmy-winning FX series could begin shooting as early as this fall.

“We are aiming for the fall of this year, and the writers’ room is working so hard now,” Sanada told Variety Saturday at AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards in Los Angeles. “We’re going to have half cast remaining, and then half new cast coming. We are finding the best crew for next season now, so I’m excited.”

“Shogun” Season 2 has yet to receive the official greenlight from FX, but talent both behind and in front of the camera has teased what’s to come from the 17th-century drama. In January, creator and executive producer Rachel Kondo said development for the new season is “ongoing,” but was hesitant to disclose further details.

“We’re still trying. We haven’t given up. And I’m not sure what we can say,” she said. Justin Marks, Kondo’s husband as well as co-creator and executive producer of “Shogun” added, “We’re about six weeks from the end of the writers room.”

In October, Marks inked an TV overall deal with FX, in which he will develop new projects for the network. This includes possible new seasons of “Shogun” with Kondo, which would be developed in collaboration with Clavell’s estate.

At this year’s Golden Globes, “Shogun” took home four prizes, including best television series and lead actor in TV drama for Sanada. The show also took home 18 awards at the 2024 Emmys, marking the most wins for any single season of television series.
