Hispanic Heritage celebration kicks off in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Some local organizations helped mark the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which kicks off on Sunday, as well as celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day, which is on Monday.

The organizations got together to share their culture with the community they now call home.

This is what the fourth year of the Latin Cultural Festival looks like, a blend of all kinds of people all here with one purpose: to have a good time. 102.3 La Mega hosted this festival.

“There’s more food this year. In the previous years, it was just mainly music a little bit of food and some other things. This year we have a lot of different foods and you know we have the things for the kids in the kids zone too so, it’s growing slowly each year,” said Latin Cultural Festival Event Coordinator Jill Wydra.

Elizebath Perez says it is important to hold events like this in the community.

“We have to celebrate. We have to show out. We have to bring our food, our culture out there so people can know us,” Perez explained.

Perez says as the Hispanic community continues to grow in the area it’s important that they represent themselves in the community.

“You know it’s a lot of Spanish people in the community so we trying to bring out events and festivals and our culture out here,” Perez continued.

One of the organizers of this event says this is a great way to come out and learn the Hispanic culture.

“Today is a special day for the Hispanic community of Wilkes-Barre. We show our culture, our food, our drinks,” said Latin Cultural Festival organizer Jonathan Alcantara.
