T&C Tried & True: Why J.Crew’s Rollneck Sweater Continues to Stand the Test of Time

Here, we will spotlight American originals whose craftsmanship, quality and excellence have earned them a permanent place in our very T&C wardrobes, homes, and lives.

When it comes to wardrobe staples, there are certain pieces that every man and woman should have at least one of in their closet. Polo Ralph Lauren’s cable-knit cashmere sweater comes to mind, as does a pair of Levi’s jeans, a Burberry trench coat, and a Barbour wax jacket. Also not to be overlooked: the J.Crew Rollneck Sweater, a brand signature that dates back to the ‘80s.

Originally introduced in 1988, the knit is best recognized for its high neckline that naturally rolls over (hence the name). J.Crew re-launched and updated the chunky knit in a range of fresh colorways and patterns last fall, and it instantly became a viral sartorial sensation for the modern generation. Since then, the label has introduced several iterations based on the original, including a linen-cotton version for summer that I loved and a cropped quarter zip for fall 2026.

The new and improved OG still retains the classic details from the J.Crew catalog days, like the namesake rolled neckline and 100 percent heritage cotton yarn, but now with subtle tweaks. The silhouette is a bit more more relaxed and oversized with just the right amount of slouch. It’s not as fitted as traditional turtleneck, which gives it more of a casual look. There’s almost a trompe l'oeil effect to the rollneck, too. The cotton yarn makes the sweater breathable and light, but the actual stitching of the knit gives off a rich, ultra-cozy look often associated with chunky sweaters.

The sleeve hems are also finished with a rolled detail.

Whenever I throw it on with a pair of jeans and lug sole boots—and that’s basically my uniform from October to March—I feel like I look straight out of a J.Crew catalog or a Nora Ephron movie. Everything about it gives Meg Ryan fall.

The fit definitely falls on the bigger side, so if you’re looking for the ideal drape, I recommend going down a size. But other than that, it’s a peak fall sweater. Great for the uncharacteristically warm autumn days we’re about to experience, but also the perfect layering piece for once the temps hit below 50 degrees again.

The sweater is a no brainer for your fall closet—especially since it starts at $98 a pop. Fair warning, though, the hardest decision you’ll have to make is choosing a colorway, pattern, or silhouette before check out. It comes in the usual solid shades, like white, blue, and black, but for fall, J.Crew debuted the rollneck with multi-color tweed-inspired stitching and preppy stripes.

While I wasn’t around for the original, I now get what all the hype is about four decades later. The J.Crew Rollneck Sweater is a classic for a reason.
