Ismail Basbeth’s ‘My Own Last Supper’ Commences Indonesia Shoot, Debuts at JAFF Market

Matta Cinema Production and Ruang Basbeth Bercerita have commenced principal photography on “My Own Last Supper,” a Chinese-Indonesian family drama helmed by Ismail Basbeth, whose previous feature “Sara” had its world premiere at Busan in 2023.

The feature, introduced at Busan’s Asian Content & Film Market in September, kicked off its 15-day shoot on Nov. 27 during the ongoing Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival and JAFF Market.

The narrative centers on Encek, a 76-year-old widower who convenes his children for a final dinner, unveiling concealed memoirs of love, loss and generational wounds before choosing the sea as his reunion place with his deceased wife. The story examines the pursuit of life and identity through the lens of a Chinese-Indonesian family across three pivotal periods: the 1960s, 1970s and 1998, addressing unresolved national trauma and historical violence through intimate personal narratives.

The production is employing a realistic approach with detailed artistic elements to authentically recreate four distinct time periods — 1960, 1970, 1998 and 2017 — ranging from modest business premises to residential interiors. Senior production designer Ong Hari Wahyu leads the visual design alongside art director Edy Wibowo, who won at the Bandung Film Festival 2025. The creative team also includes Indonesian Film Festival award-winning costume designer Retno Damayanti and makeup artist Faradila.

Nicholas Anderson portrays the young Encek, with Jessy Davita as young Encim. During JAFF Market 2025, the cast made a promotional appearance, distributing red-wrapped tamarind candies to visitors — a symbolic token of love featured in the film.

The project reunites Basbeth with director of photography, Satria Kurnianto.

Producer Chakalica Widyadipraja of Matta Cinema Production is targeting a 2026 release for the feature.
