Jets Have Passed on Rex Ryan as Head Coach: Report
The New York Jets are looking for their next head coach after the team unceremoniously fired Robert Saleh after Week 5 of the 2024 season. With Jeff Ulbrich taking over, the team would go 5-12.

Naturally, the Jets are now in search of a new head coach. They have interviewed many high-profile candidates, including Darren Rizzi, Aaron Glenn, Ron Rivera, and former head coach Rex Ryan.
Ryan has stated many times he wishes to return to coaching and has expressed confidence that he could land the Jets job. However, that appears not to be the case.

According to a report from Connor Hughes by way of Rami Lavi, Ryan is "completely out" of the running for the Jets head coach position.
Lavi posted on X, sharing a comment that Hiughes made on WFAN.

"Rex Ryan I heard is completely out, that is not gonna happen with the Jets," Hughes said on the program.
Hughes has shared some inside information, which is that the Jets are not considering Ryan for the head coaching position. This makes a ton of sense considering the other candidates that are interviewing for the job.
Lions defensive coordinator Glenn is among the favorites to land a head coach position somewhere. He has interviewed with many teams already, including the Jets.
Steve Spagnuolo, Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator, is also a sought-after candidate who has been interviewing with teams. Despite Ryan still possessing the skillset to be a head coach, he did not have the best run with the Jets previously.
Ryan coached the Jets from 2019 to 2014. In those six seasons, he led the team to an overall record of 46-50. The Jets also appeared in the playoffs only twice during that time.
Though Ryan commands a ton of respect, the Jets might not want to revisit a situation where they bring back a head coach who failed.

The Jets also have a general manager to find, and that general manager will need to work to rebound a struggling franchise. The new head coach will be part of this rebuild, which includes the team getting a quarterback.
Aaron Rodgers is unlikely to remain with the team, even if he doesn't choose to retire. His play with the Jets has not been ideal, and the rumors of dysfunction might be too much to overlook.
For now, the Jets will continue their head coach search, and that will reportedly not involve Ryan any longer.
