Jon Stewart Slams Trump’s Comments About ‘Toy Rationing’ Pencils and Dolls: ‘A Depression-Era View of What Kids Play With in 2025’
On this week’s episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart went after Donald Trump for comments suggesting that children may have to settle for fewer toys in his economy.
Stewart opened his monologue by recounting Trump’s Sunday interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker and feigning curiosity about how the president will thread the “rhetorical needle” of “taking credit for the remaining good parts of the economy, while subtly assigning blame to Joe Biden for some of the bad, on fire parts.”
A clip from the interview then played of Trump stating, “I think the good parts are the Trump economy and the bad parts are the Biden economy.”
“Nailed it! He went right at it,” Stewart joked. “No attempt at persuasion or allegory or metaphor. Trump good, Biden bad. He’s a regular Shakespeare.”
He went on to say that he works hard to “not take the bait” of Trump’s “flood the zone media ecosystem,” and tries to find solace in “things in my life that give me pleasure or peace.”
“For instance, quick story. I have a niece. 11 years old. Loves dolls,” Stewart joked. “I was going to get her 20 or 30 of them for her birthday, just to see the joy of a child. You can’t put a price tag on that.”
Stewart then played another clip from the interview where Trump said, “I think can have three dolls or four dolls.”
“It’s just not that many dolls,” Stewart exclaimed. “Sure, she can have a small tea party with her dolls. But her dream had been a quasi-realistic ‘Conclave’ reenactment with dolls. That’s what she wanted!”
However, all was not lost for Stewart’s figurative niece. The late-night pundit went on to explain that “she also loves taking standardized tests,” and that he plans to buy her a “baby’s first S.A.T. kit” complete with “scantron sheets and around 250 number two pencils.”
Stewart then played a clip of Trump saying, “They don’t need to have 250 pencils. They can have five.”
“Trump has such a depression-era view of what kids play with in 2025,” Stewart said. “‘Kids don’t need 20 sets of those hoops you hit down the street with a stick! Just one hoop is Jim dandy!'”
He continued, “If a Democrat had even hinted at toy rationing for American children, we’d have a full week of Fox Special Reports on the sobbing children of socialist America, and a boom in gun-toting patriots going, ‘You can have my gi Joe when you pry it from my kung-fu grip!'”
