‘Landman’ Adds Michael Kelly for (Now-Delayed) Season 3

  • House of Cards actor Michael Kelly has joined the cast of Landman.
  • Filming for Season 3 of the series is underway in Texas, or will begin this month.
  • That means Landman Season 3 won’t be out until at least 2027.

Season 3 of Landman will be worth the wait.

Taylor Sheridan has secured Lioness star Michael Kelly (Byron Westfield) for the new season of Landman, Variety reports, continuing his favorite hobby of reusing actors from his other projects. You’ll also recognize him from House of Cards and Jack Ryan.

Landman also stars Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, Ali Larter, Michelle Randolph, Kayla Wallace, Sam Elliott, and Jacob Lofland. The series is clearing the dust for a reset in Season 3, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and Michael Kelly will be a regular face. He’s playing William Crockett, who runs the biggest oil management firm in the world and “is a titan of industry and everything about him exudes efficiency and money.”

“It’s kind of a reset [for season three],” Christian Wallace, Taylor Sheridan’s co-creator, remarked earlier this year. “We have these characters entering into different dynamics with one another, and now we have T.L. (Elliott), Tommy (Thornton) and Cooper (Lofland) all working at the same company, but not under the auspices of this larger corporation. It’s now family-run, very small, starting from almost scratch. That’s a whole new dynamic for them. Along with these other characters from M-Tex who are taking a pretty big gamble.”

Each new season of Landman has brought with it a big-name star. In Season 1, it was Jon Hamm (he’s gone; we won’t spoil it). Season 2 brought out Western staple Sam Elliott, and now we’ve got Mr. Kelly enrolled for Season 3.

“I’ve been biting my tongue y’all!!!! I am beyond thrilled and excited to be joining the incredible cast over on @landmanpplus on @paramountplus,” the actor writes on Instagram, sharing the news with fans. “Thank you to Taylor and everyone for letting me join the party!!”

Why Is Season 3 of Landman Delayed?

Landman was renewed for a third season last December, and filming was due to start earlier this year. However, it sounds like they’re just now getting the cameras rolling. Actor James Jordan, who plays Dale on the show, told Us Weekly in a July interview that he and the other actors were “ready to get back to work,” and that Taylor Sheridan was “writing as we speak.”

As for why? Well, these things take time. The series creator has also brought back director Stephen Kay, who worked on the first two seasons. All this to say, we won’t be getting new episodes of Landman until 2027 at the earliest.

“Everybody’s very excited to get back to work. It’s going to be a great time,” James further said to Us Weekly over the summer. “We’re pumped to get back to the Fort Worth area and shoot Season 3.”

Because you can’t set a modern Western drama in Texas and not shoot it there, right? It is a show about oil, after all. The show is based on the Texas Monthly podcast Boomtown and takes place around Midland and Odessa, in West Texas.

When the time comes, Landman Season 3 will premiere on Paramount+. In the meantime, you can stream seasons 1 and 2 on the platform.
