“UpDating” is getting a glow up. The creators behind the live comedic dating show, which has become a viral sensation via social media sites like YouTube, have partnered with ITV America (“Love Island USA”) to adapt the format into a TV and streaming series.
“UpDating” creators Brandon Berman and Harrison Forman will develop the new series along with ITV America Nashville, led by executive producer Adam Reed. “UpDating” is a live event where multiple singles embark go on blindfolded blind dates, onstage and in front of a live audience. Hosted by Berman and Forman, the events are unscripted and unexpected – “packed with laughs and including fascinating, sometimes-weird, sometimes-awkward and often-spicy interactions among the hopeful daters,” the producers say.
The new TV format will be modeled on that live experience. Episodes will be released in real time, which means at-home audiences will be able to participate and also join the cast themselves.
“’UpDating’ is a format that we’ve built and fine-tuned in front of live audiences across the globe, night after night, for years. Every show is entirely unpredictable, and at this point, we know exactly how to navigate the chaos and turn it into magic,” Berman and Forman said in a joint statement. “There’s been a lot of recent interest from potential creative partners, and we’re excited to team up with ITV America to bring the mayhem to an even bigger stage.”
“UpDating” just launched a nationwide winter tour, which includes two shows in Los Angeles next month. The show has been performed in more than 140 cities around the world; recently that has included The Wilbur Theatre in Boston and The Town Hall in New York City.
“UpDating” live shows are uploaded weekly on its YouTube channel, which now has more than a illion subscribers. The show also has 1.6 million Instagram followers, 1.5 million TikTok followers and 500,000 Snapchat subscribers. According to the producers, “UpDating” as now reached more than five billion total views across platforms.
“Brandon and Harrison have created a hilarious and thrilling live show experience that’s also ridiculously addictive on YouTube,” Reed said. “We’re working together to really supersize the show, amplifying the creative elements that have made it such a hit, from its genuine spontaneity to the interactive nature, while adding some new twists that will appeal to both the hardcore fans and newbies.”
ITV America, part of ITV Studios, is behind Peacock’s “Love Island USA” and its companion shows, as well as NBC’s “The Voice,” Netflix’s “Queer Eye,” Fox’s “Hell’s Kitchen” and more. The Nashville division headed by Reed, produced NBC’s “Toby Keith: American Icon” as well as Lifetime’s “Thank God: Christmas at Keller Ranch.”
