The New York Mets need at least one more pitcher to finalize their rotation.
President of baseball operations David Stearns has rebuilt the starting pitching this offseason with bringing in Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes. However, they are still one true starter away.

After having the second-worst season of his career, the Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly listening to offers for Jordan Montgomery. Would Montgomery fit well with the Mets?
Of the four pitchers confirmed in the Mets rotation (Montas, Holmes, Sean Manaea and Kodai Senga), all of them are right-handed pitchers. The Mets lost José Quintana to free agency and would presumably like to have at least one lefty in the rotation.
Here is what a potential trade could look like:
- New York Mets Acquire: SP Jordan Montgomery
- Arizona Diamondbacks Acquire: RHP Jonah Tong (Mets No. 10 prospect), cash considerations
Jordan Montgomery only has one year left of team control before hitting free agency in 2026. This limits how much of a return the Diamondbacks will receive for him.
Jonah Tong was a late call up to Double-A Binghamton last season, but he posted a 2.89 ERA in two starts. He's expected to start 2025 at Double-A, but he could move up to Triple-A if he continues to pitch well.
As for the Mets, Montgomery would provide them with a left-handed starter who can eat innings. He was effective in the Texas Rangers' rotation with a 2.79 ERA in Arlington and a combined 3.20 ERA between the Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals.
