New German police video aims to track down terrorist survivors
Long-sought members of the Red Army Faction (RAF) left-wing group that posed a terrorist threat to Germany over decades are now thought to have committed further robberies, prosecutors said on Wednesday.
A new video, photographs and fresh information on the former terrorists Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub is being used to track them down.
The two men are alleged to have mounted attacks on cash transports and supermarkets between 1999 and 2016, along with Daniela Klette, who was arrested in Berlin at the start of the year.
They are now linked to a further three robberies, taking the number to 13 crimes, with total damage put at €2.7 million ($3.0 million). The money was used to finance their lives in the underground.
The three are under investigation for crimes including aggravated robbery and attempted murder, along with abduction for extortion.
Klette, Staub and Garweg were members of the RAF third generation. The organization, which killed more than 30 people, announced its disbandment in 1998.
The new video is to be broadcast on German television on Wednesday evening. "The assumption is that this video will show Burkhard Garweg," a statement released before broadcast said.
Police have also published counterfeit identity documents that could have been used in renting flats near the crime scenes. The aim is to locate the landlords who rented out the premises at the time.
The original RAF was widely known outside Germany as the Baader-Meinhoff Group after two of its main protagonists.
