Peru’s ‘The Last Laugh’ Gets Mexican Remake at Sin Sentido Films (EXCLUSIVE)

Peru’s Ladines! has sold the remake rights to its critical and box office hit “The Last Laugh” (“Muerto de risa”) to Mexico’s Sin Sentido Films during Ventana Sur.

This marks the second time its director-writer-producer Gonzalo Ladines has sold remake rights to his films. His family comedy “YouTuber Dad” (“Papá Youtuber”) was the first original Peruvian pic to sell its international remake rights where it was optioned by Mexico, Spain, France and India.

Shortlisted for the Platino Awards in the Ibero-American Comedy category, “The Last Laugh” follows talk show host Javi Fuentes, renowned for poking fun at others. After his father dies, he loses his sense of humor and is usurped by an annoying influencer. To get his show back, he hires Alfonsina, an alcoholic comedian who will teach him how to laugh at himself instead of others.

It now streams on prominent Spain SVOD platform Filmin.

Ladines is also the co-creator of the web series “Los Cinéfilos” and is the writer-director of hit comedy “Just Like in the Movies” (“Como en el Cine”), which has just been theatrically re-released in Peru to mark its tenth anniversary.

“We’re very happy that a company of Sin Sentido Films’ caliber is interested in telling a new version of this story, which is so personal to me,” said Ladines, who is currently developing new comedies.

Led by women, Mexico City-based Sin Sentido Films is no stranger to remakes. It previouly re-versioned Argentine hit “I Married an Idiot” (“Me Casé con un Boludo”), with Batán Silva (“The Boys,” “The Flight Attendant,” “The Sinner”), directing.

With a slate that combines auteur-driven projects and mainstream pics, its most recent productions include “Non Negotiable “ (”No negociable”) by Juan Taratuto and “We Will Play in The Forest” (“Jugaremos en el Bosque”) from Alejandra Cárdenas and Guillermo Granillo, available on Netflix and ViX, respectively.

“At Sin Sentido Films we champion genre cinema and high-quality comedies. From the moment we discovered Gonzalo Ladines’ work and talent, we saw enormous potential to collaborate and we’re very excited to begin this partnership with ‘The Last Laugh,’” the company said.

For the Mexican version, Sin Sentido Films will work with one of today’s most prominent comedy voices: Tato Alexander, an actress and screenwriter known for her work in “Backdoor,” “Cómo sobrevivir soltero” and the feature “(Don’t Know) How To Be” (“(No sé) cómo ser”), which debuted at the Morelia International Film Festival. She previously adapted the feature “Lo Mejor del Mundo” for Mexican audiences, honing her singular voice in present-day comedy.

“The Last Laugh” was also produced by Pinky Campos (2020 Peruvian Oscar entry “Retablo”) and co-produced by Chilean producers Karina Jury (“La California,” “La Versione di Anita”) and Gonzalo Carracedo (“Vera de Verdad,” “Hermanos”).
