Robert Irwin Becomes Global Ambassador for Columbia Sportswear

Robert Irwin was just 5 years old when he met Gert Boyle, founder of Columbia Sportswear.

Now 21, the Australian television star, zookeeper and conservationist has rekindled that relationship by becoming the company’s newest global ambassador.

“I’ve dedicated my life to sharing the beauty of the natural world and inspiring people to have fun in the outdoors,” said Irwin. “Columbia and their gear have played an important role in my life, and I’m absolutely thrilled to officially join forces.”

Irwin is the son of Steve Irwin, nicknamed The Crocodile Hunter, who died of a stingray bite in New Zealand when Robert was just 2. Since then, Irwin along with his mother and sister Bindi have kept their father’s memory alive by following in his footsteps.

Case in point, Irwin just returned from his annual research trip where he wrangled saltwater crocodiles in mangrove mud. “I’ve thrown everything at my Columbia gear, including wrangling 15-foot-long crocs in mud up to my chest,” he said. “I know I can count on it and I’m looking forward to putting it through even more paces on my upcoming adventures.”

Irwin will be featured in Columbia’s irreverent “Engineered for Whatever” campaign, appearing in spots and activations this winter and spring.

When Irwin isn’t wrestling crocodiles, he’s dancing, and will be featured on the new season of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” starting Tuesday. He also serves as cohost of reality television show, “I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!” on Network 10 alongside Julia Morris.
