Robert Redford’s Unlikely Western Team-Up With Jennifer Lopez Is a Streaming Hit in America

There have been several high-profile passings from the world of acting in 2025, with the most recent that of Robert Redford, encouraging a whole new generation of audience to discover the great man’s iconic filmography. Among the notable films — such as 1980’s Ordinary People, which saw Redford win the Academy Award for Best Director in his directorial debut — a 21st century Western drama has returned to the streaming charts as viewers uncover some of the more underrated gems in Redford’s catalog.

An Unfinished Life, a 2005 Western that saw Redford team up with Morgan Freeman and Jennifer Lopez, has found a second life on streaming after failing to make a desired impact two decades ago. At the time of writing, An Unfinished Life is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Pluto TV in the U.S., and is finally getting the appreciation it deserved when it debuted. With just 53% from critics and a more positive 68% from audiences on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the Lasse Halström-directed feature is one of the more underappreciated entries in Redford’s vast filmography. “Einar (Robert Redford), a recovering alcoholic rancher who lives with his loyal pal Mitch (Morgan Freeman), gets an unexpected visit from his daughter-in-law, Jean (Jennifer Lopez), and granddaughter, Griff (Becca Gardner). Einar holds a grudge against Jean because he feels she’s responsible for his son’s accidental death, but he reluctantly lets her stay at the farm when he learns that she’s trapped in a violent relationship. Over time, they grow closer and try to heal their emotional wounds.”

Coming in at #8 in the ranks, the movie is outperforming the tenth-placed Good Will Hunting and the ninth-placed Indecent Proposal, another entry from Redford’s catalog. An Unfinished Life is at #8, with the hilarious Coming to America at #7, the Cillian Murphy-led 28 Days Later at #6, and Tim Burton‘s Sleepy Hollow at #5. Places 4-2 are occupied by all three movies in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather trilogy, leaving the modern comedy classic Step Brothers at #1.
