Robin Wright Says ‘America Is a S—show’ and ‘Everything’s Rush, Competition and Speed’; She Calls Leaving for England ‘Liberating’

“Forrest Gump” and “House of Cards” star Robin Wright is the latest celebrity to move from the U.S. to the U.K., and she spoke out about her decision to The Sunday Times.

After mainly working in the U.K. for the past few years, Wright rented a home in the Chilterns in Southern England and spent the weekends there with her stepsister. Now, she’s planning to move to the seaside with her partner Henry Smith, a British-born, Australian-raised architect whom she met in an English pub.

“America is a s—show,” Wright said. “I love being in [England]. There’s a freedom of self here. People are so kind. They’re living. They’re not in the car in traffic, panicked on a phone call, eating a sandwich. That’s most of America. Everything’s rush, competition and speed.”

She added, “Everyone’s building a huge house, and I’m just done with all that — I love the quiet. And I’ve met my person. Finally…I’m seen and loved for who I am. It’s so relaxing.”

In addition to Wright, Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O’Donnell have also moved to the U.K. and Ireland, respectively, but because of President Trump’s second term.

“We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in.’ And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here,’” DeGeneres said in July. “It’s absolutely beautiful. We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture — everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life. It’s clean. Everything here is just better — the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”

O’Donnell revealed in March that she was applying for Irish citizenship. “When you know it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back,” she said. “It has been heartbreaking to see what is happening over there politically and hard for me personally as well.”
