Spain swelters in first heatwave of the year

Hot air masses from Africa are bringing Spain its first real heatwave of the summer.

Temperatures of more than 40 degrees Celsius were measured in the Andalusian city of Seville, for example, the national weather service AEMET said on Friday.

The air was similarly hot and oppressive in other cities in the Guadalquivir river valley in the south and in Zaragoza on the Ebro river in the north-east of the country.

AEMET is warning of temperatures of up to 44 degrees. These could be reached on Saturday in the Zaragoza area.

On the holiday island of Mallorca temperatures were somewhat more moderate at first glance - around 33 degrees. However, due to the higher humidity, they felt at least as hot as in Andalusia.

A slight cooling is not expected until Sunday when temperatures are expected to fall below 40 degrees again.
