‘Tulsa King’ Spinoff ‘NOLA King’ With Samuel L. Jackson to Change Showrunners as Dave Erickson Exits (EXCLUSIVE)

The potential “Tulsa King” spinoff series “NOLA King” is changing showrunners.

Variety has learned exclusively from sources that Dave Erickson is no longer attached to run “NOLA King,” which has not been formally greenlit at Paramount+ at this time. Sources say the departure was due to a scheduling conflict and that the search is actively underway to find a new showrunner for the high-priority series.

Reps for Paramount did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

“NOLA King” was first reported to be in the works at Paramount+ in June. As reported at the time, the series will be set up by Jackson guest starring in multiple episodes of Season 3 of “Tulsa King” before he would move over to his own series. Exact character details are being kept under wraps, but Jackson would play a character a prominent gangster in New Orleans, similar to Sylvester Stallone’s Dwight “The General” Manfredi in “Tulsa King.”

Erickson is also the showrunner on “Tulsa King” Season 3 and fellow Taylor Sheridan-verse show “Mayor of Kingstown” starring Jeremy Renner. “Tulsa King” recently wrapped filming on its third season, while “Mayor of Kingstown” Season 4 wrapped filming in June. Neither season has a premiere date at this time, but both are expected to air later this year.

Erickson remains under his overall deal with MTV Entertainment Studios, which he re-upped last year. He was named showrunner on “Tulsa King” Season 3 after the show went without a traditional showrunner for its second season. Terence Winter had been the showrunner on Season 1. Erickson originally joined “Mayor of Kingstown” in the show’s second season.

Sheridan is an executive producer on “NOLA King” along with David C. Glasser of 101 Studios. MTV Entertainment Studios will produce.
