Warriors Could Land Former Defensive Player of the Year in Massive Deal

The Golden State Warriors have been looking all across the league for help before the trade deadline. The front office believes that this team needs some extra firepower around star guard Steph Curry if they want to go on another title run.

The Warriors have a few pieces that could entice opposing teams and it could see them be very active ahead of the deadline. The team has been searching for another star player but it seems that they could simply add some extra depth instead.

In this new trade idea by Ishaan Bhattacharya of Fadeaway World, the Warriors bring in a former Defensive Player of the Year. This would be Marcus Smart of the Memphis Grizzlies as Golden State tries to give themselves a better chance come playoff time.

Golden State Warriors Receive: Marcus Smart ($20.2 million), John Konchar ($6.1 million)

Memphis Grizzlies Receive: Gary Payton II ($9.1 million), Kyle Anderson ($8.7 million), Buddy Hield ($8.7 million), 2025 Second-Round Pick (BOS), 2025 Second-Round Pick (MIA), 2030 Second-Round Pick (GSW)

“The Warriors are a competent team defense unit already, so adding Smart would push them toward a top-ranking defense. Smart and Green on the same floor together is going to frustrate a lot of opponents and even give more utility to one-dimensional centers like Kevon Looney who can focus on rim protection given the high-level perimeter defenders they can rely on.”

This would be quite the package going out for the Warriors but Smart could be worth it. His defensive identity, along with his normally strong shooting from distance could help the Warriors tremendously.

The former Defensive Player of the Year has averaged 9.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. Smart hasn’t quite fit in with the Grizzlies and moving over to Golden State could see a resurgence for his career.

After a very hot start, the Warriors have fallen back down the earth in terms of the standings. If they were to pull off a deal like this, it could have them pushed back toward being contenders in the Western Conference.

Golden State has less than a week to figure out how they want to go about this trade deadline but Curry isn’t getting any younger. The team owes it to him to push the chips in and make another run at a title.
