Luckily for director Gerard Johnstone, he gained his own exceptional antagonist with his seminal film M3GAN — though nobody could have expected which specific section of the horror community would fall in instant love with the killer robot. This genre has always had a thriving community of LGBTQ+ fans. They’ve not only made the 2022 scary movie one of the most popular in recent memory but elevated its titular murderer to true legend status. There are tons of reasons why Queer audiences have grown to love this killer doll so much, from her comedy to her tendency to kill toxic men. Now that the sequel, M3GAN 2.0, is dancing into theaters, it’s time we invesitage how this killer doll became such a queer icon. And the answer is one most people probably won’t expect: her pride.
‘M3GAN’s Campy Comedy Makes the Doll a Queer Icon
First and foremost, M3GAN is a perfect combination of horror and campy comedy. Focusing on Gemma (Allison Williams) as she adopts her orphan niece, Cady (Violet McGraw), the roboticist develops M3GAN (Amie Donald and Jenna Davis), a life-size robot, as the young girl’s companion. What follows is bloody chaos as M3GAN gains sentience and begins to kill anyone she sees as a threat, offering a constant stream of dry humor that places the movie perfectly into the canon of LGBTQ+ comedy mainstays. Epitomized by recent hits like Overcompensating and Bottoms, modern LGBTQ+ projects are often laden with irreverent, wry humor.
M3GAN may not include any overt LGBTQ+ themes, but it does embody this style perfectly with its camp horror. Moments of the doll acting like a snarky girlboss towards a young bully (before tearing off his ear and chasing him into traffic) or performing flawless choreography before brutally murdering two men, fusing this style of comedy with shocking bloodshed. She’s the definition of camp, but that’s not the only reason she’s so popular with LGBTQ+ fans — it’s the doll’s autonomy that makes her such an icon.
LGBTQ+ Fans Are Drawn to M3GAN Because of Her Pride
“Diva Worship” is a long-documented phenomenon that occurs (often with LGBTQ+ men) when a woman pop star is elevated to massive heights by her following, being seen as a legendary figure and leader of her fandom. Whether it be Mariah Carey’s massive flock of “Lambs” or Cher’s literal country’s worth of diehard fans, it’s common knowledge that many of these iconic women are buoyed by entire legions of supportive gay men. Research has shown that, along with each woman’s talent, a large reason why they gain such a wide LGBTQ+ audience is that they not only claim complete autonomy over their voice and body, but they also find pride in flaunting a femininity that is often looked down on by society.
This isn’t to say that all LGBTQ+ men want to be feminine, but as a group that faces constant attacks over how they present themselves, it’s inspiring to see someone take pride in every aspect of who they are, which is exactly why M3GAN has become such an LGBTQ+ icon. Not only does the doll champion her femininity, but her entire narrative (aside from the occasional murder) is discovering autonomy and silencing the voices who aim to use her.
Of course, this in no way excuses her bloodthirsty mentality, but it means she isn’t just a one-dimensional killer; she’s a prideful force unwilling to let anyone control her. And when you’re an LGBTQ+ person who has people (personally and nationally) constantly trying to control how you live, it’s no wonder you’d love a character like that. If you still don’t know what we’re talking about, then just watch SNL‘s sketch of M3GAN; it showcases not only the online response to her but also how Gay men have come to adore the way this “unhinged plastic woman” has complete control over her own flawless, extremely evil actions. It perfectly summarizes why queer people are in awe of the killer doll, and why she’s become the complete icon she is today.
‘M3GAN’ Did What Needed To Be Done
Now, while M3GAN has become an LGBTQ+ horror icon, that doesn’t mean she should be considered representative of this community. In fact, many LGBTQ+ individuals dislike that her marketing is almost solely focused on trying to attract gay men, continuing a toxic tradition of the mainstream media ignoring every other identity in this diverse population. But despite this, it’s common knowledge that many LGBTQ+ horror fans are drawn to villains — whether it be the misunderstood Carrie or the obviously openly-gay diva himself, the Babadook — because they are often subversive figures, characters targeted by a rigid society just like so many Queer people have sadly been for generations (and still are today). So it’s no wonder that, in creating a character who not only laughs in the face of social norms but does so while preserving her most authentic self, LGBTQ+ fans have made M3GAN the absolute horror legend she is now. Let’s hope the much-anticipated sequel continues this trend.
