After ‘Exterritorial,’ Another German Thriller Is Dominating the Netflix Charts Despite a 35% Rotten Tomatoes Score
It looks like this is a pretty good year for German movies on Netflix. A couple of weeks ago, the world was taken by storm when it was announced that Exterritorial became one of the most popular movies on the platform after just three months. Now, a new thriller hailing from the same country is taking over the top 10. This week, Netflix announced that Brick debuted as the #1 most-watched non-English film globally, which might point to another hit in the making.
Brick has a pretty unique concept. It centers around a couple who are not at the best moment in their relationship. However, they are forced to put that aside when they simply wake up one night and discover that there is a massive brick wall outside their door, which prevents them from going outside. Since the wall is pretty much indestructible, the couple is forced to team up with neighbors in order to try to figure out a way out of the situation.
Netflix subscribers felt intrigued and desperately wanted to discover the secret of the black brick wall. The German movie accumulated more than 18 million views in less than a week, which made it the top non-English movie globally. All of that happened despite Brick getting a less-than-stellar 35% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score is even worse, at 28%. From the looks of it, Netflix subscribers first check out the movie to find out its secrets and twists, and then go online to rant about it.
Which Other Movies Are in Netflix’s Global Top 10?
Brick outperformed several notable titles this week, including Exterritorial. The previous German hit raked in one million views this week, while France’s K.O. and India’s Raid 2 accumulated 1.3 and 1.8 million views, respectively. Five other movies debuted the same week as Brick — Almost Cops (Netherlands), Ziam (Thailand), Aap Joisa Koi (India), My Love Will Make You Disappear (Philippines), and A Brother and 7 Siblings (Indonesia) — but none of them attracted as many viewers as Brick did.
Brick is directed by Philip Koch (Outside the Box), and the cast features Matthias Schweighöfer (Army of the Dead), Ruby O. Fee (Army of Thieves), Salber Lee Williams (Ghost Island), Murathan Muslu (7500), Sira-Anna Faal (Pauline), Alexander Beyer (The Little Drummer Girl), and Frederick Lau (Victoria).
