‘Fantastic Four’ Cameo Guide: Doctor Doom’s Home, Lots of Marvel Villains and Original ’90s Stars

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” now playing in theaters.

“Fantastic Four: First Steps” marks the official entry of Marvel’s First Family in the MCU, and there are plenty of references and Easter eggs from the comic books in the new movie.

“First Steps” is the third Marvel movie to hit theaters this year, but it packs way more hidden references and nods than “Captain America: Brave New World” or “Thunderbolts.” It’s not on the same level of Easter eggs as last year’s “Deadpool and Wolverine,” but “First Steps” makes a strong effort to appeal to eagle-eyed Marvel fans.

Since the movie takes place in a universe separate from the rest of the MCU (specifically, it is Earth-828 — more on that below), there aren’t any references or cameos to the Avengers or any other existing Marvel character. There’s no Avengers Tower in this version of a retro-futuristic New York City, just the Fantastic Four’s Baxter Building. Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, Human Torch and the Thing are the only known heroes in this world, meaning there aren’t any other superheroes, mutants or other cape-wearing do-gooders around. But, there are plenty of villains that the Fantastic Four has already defeated, and several of them get shoutouts during “First Steps.”

Paul Walter Hauser plays the underground bad guy Mole Man, who gets a surprising amount of screen time for a minor villain. John Malkovich was also slated to play the evil Red Ghost and previously appeared in a trailer, but his role was cut from the final edit of the movie. There’s also a major nod to Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, who will make his official entrance in the MCU in next year’s “Avengers: Doomsday.”
