T&C Tried & True: My Go-To Cashmere Brand Finally Makes Outerwear
Here at T&C, we pride ourselves on our discerning eye for quality. With Tried & True, our editors will give you an inside look at the pieces they simply cannot live without.
If you were to go to my closet you’d notice, aside from the fact that it’s stuffed to the brim, that I own an abundance of Lisa Yang pieces. It’s true: my knitwear preference has been Lisa Yang for years now. My very favorite cashmere skirt that I wear on heavy rotation all winter? Lisa Yang. The perfect claret colored cashmere crewneck sweater? Also Lisa Yang. In my opinion, you can’t get better design or quality and still feel like the luxury of it all is approachable. There’s a reason why I have heavily invested.

And while I have more than my fair share of pieces from the Stockholm-based knitwear house, I had never considered that they would one day branch out into doublé cashmere and... much to my great pleasure, outerwear. One of my many strongly held opinions is that daily dressing in the winter doesn’t require everything to be considered and perfect so long as you have a really good coat. It should come as no surprise that a Lisa Yang topper... well, it belongs in a category of its own.
Granted, the weather has not been exactly conducive to, nor has it necessitated outerwear of late, but we’re about to arrive at that day when you need more than a light layer, and less than say the reinforcements you’d call in for frigid temps. The coat in question that I got to play around with is the Doublé Button coat and it is some of the smartest design I have come across. It’s a wool and cashmere blend, and the double face finish means that it’s got the perfect weight-to-warmth ratio: thick enough that it’s substantial, but neither hefty nor bulky. So that’s a win in my book.
I am not normally one for black outerwear, but the drama and versatility of this piece really drew me in. There are relaxed details such as the drop shoulders and raglan sleeves, but also a balance of structure in both the weight and shape interplay with the tailoring, and of course the fact that the button details make for the perfect dramatic stand collar or funnel collar depending on how you want to style it. Or you could leave the collar unbuttoned entirely for a more easy and effortless effect.

Then there are the buttons, which take the piece to the next level. There are buttons at the front, side and back center seams, which both adds innovative movement and freedom in styling, all thanks to the strong emphasis on buttons in traditional Chinese tailoring. It’s hard to overstate how fabulous this design element is, especially with how it impacts the versatility of a piece. One day its structured and more formal, another it’s relaxed. It’s all how you choose to wear it—and that is the genius of good design.
My only note would be that the size 36 is roomy. I’d venture to guess I could get away with a 34 and not have to roll the sleeves. But that’s really it. Even if the beginning of coat season brings the dread of freezing temperatures to come, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited about the layering opportunities that await from just this coat alone.
