Mk2 Films Partners With Juliette Binoche on Directorial Debut ‘In-I In Motion,’ Charting Her Creative Journey With Akram Khan (EXCLUSIVE)
Mk2 Films has partnered with Juliette Binoche on her directorial debut, “In-I In Motion,” which is set to premiere out of competition at San Sebastián and Busan film festivals.
The Paris-based company will handle international sales for “In-I In Motion” and is also preparing a simultaneous worldwide release across arthouse networks and cultural venues.
The film charts the creative process behind a performance co-created by Binoche and acclaimed British choreographer and dancer Akram Khan in 2007.
On top of directing it, Binoche also produced “In-I In Motion” with Sébastien de Fonseca at Miao Productions.
Drawing on dozens of hours of previously unseen footage, Binoche tells how she and Khan stepped away from their established careers in 2007 and co-created over the course of six months “In-I,” an intense, boundary-breaking performance which they went on to present 100 times worldwide.
Binoche, who’s had a big career revival in the last 10 years and presided over this year’s Cannes Jury, revisits that intimate journey, from the first spark of inspiration to the final applause, she retraces the emotional and creative arc of a singular collaboration. Through the film, Binoche also ponders on the essence of artistic creation, the vulnerability that it involves and its transformative impact.
“Watching the rehearsal footage again sixteen years later, I was struck by the intensity of the work, by the fire of our desire to move forward without fear, but also by the humour that shines through,” Binoche said. “”In-I In Motion’ seeks to draw the audience into the very heart of creation. It invites the artist
within each viewer to sharpen their edge.”
Nathanael Karmitz, Mk2 chairman of the board, said, “We were immediately struck by this daring film; a singular and captivating project that lays bare the creative act, rarely explored on screen.”
Earlier this summer, Mk2, which also operates a thriving arthouse cinema circuit in Paris and Spain, successfully orchestrated the global launch of Charlie Chaplin’s newly restored 4K version of “The Gold Rush,” marking its centenary with screenings in 500 venues worldwide.
“In-I In Motion” is produced in association with Yggdrasil (Ola Strøm), Léger Production
(Solène Léger), in collaboration with Babel Label Co Ltd (Megumi), with the support
of Kering and the BNP Paribas Foundation.
